Tips to minimise falls:
Clutter free environment – Keep your home neat and tidy. Remove all clutter, such as stacks of old newspapers and magazines, especially from hallways and staircases.
Remove tripping hazards – Have a close look in your home for items such as loose carpet, slippery throw rugs, or wooden floorboards that stick up. Make sure those get repaired, removed or replaced for more effective fall prevention.
Install grab bars and handrails – These safety devices are crucial for going up and down stairs, getting on and off the toilet, and stepping in and out of the bathtub without injuring yourself.
Avoid wearing loose clothing – Be wise in choosing your cloths. Ensure they are properly fitted and hemmed clothing that doesn’t bunch up or drag on the ground.
Adequate lighting – Bright lights especially in the stairways and narrow hallways serve ideal for elderly who are at risk of falls. Additionally, night-lights/lamps in bedrooms and bathrooms may provide better guidance at night.
Use of non-slip socks/shoes – Purchase non-slip shoes or socks that have grip on the soles of the feet.
Non-slip mats – These can be used in wet areas of your home such as toilets, bathrooms, kitchen and laundry areas.
