Spinal Mobilisations & Manipulations

Manual therapy can help to reduce restrictive muscle spasm and increase lubrication of the joints. Some mobilisations are done using direct pressure of the hands and fingers on the joints of the spine, while some are done by assisting the body’s usual movements such as twisting and bending. If our physiotherapists deem it is appropriate, they will suggest in applying spinal mobilisations.
When the joints of the spine are very stiff, it is usually helpful to move individual joints in a series of small repetitive movements. Manual therapy includes techniques that glide joints in a rhythmic manner (mobilisation), gap joint surfaces (manipulation) and/or use muscle contractions to restrict or loosen joints. The effects of this treatment is often found to be short lived and it is vital that you adhere to the home exercise program, demonstrated by your physiotherapist, to compliment the manual therapy treatment.

Benefits of spinal mobilisations and manipulations include:

  • Improved range of motion – spinal mobilisation/manipulation increases flexibility thereby increasing the patient’s range of motion

  • Reduced drug dependence spinal mobilisation/manipulation does not use pharmaceuticals to manage pain

  • Avoiding surgery because spinal mobilisation/manipulation is non-invasive it can prevent you from having to undergo surgery
